The Kachashi means to dance freely in Okinawa. I am told I came out dancing, born feet first. A few years later my brother, Nathaniel, and I created a dancing “firework” show for my parents in our upstairs bedroom with multi-colored flashlights and our pal, the animatronic Teddy Ruxpin.

Two years after that, at our elementary school variety show in a sparkly blue genie outfit, I cut loose to some Chaka Khan partnered with the best cowboy around: my faithful brother, wearing a furry vest and chaps. We were five and six years old. Fast forward to the 21st century where I have been able to approach the lives I portray on camera and on stage with the same kind of freeing abandon. Escaping into another’s shoes reminds me of the interconnectedness of human life, and for that, I’m grateful.

This past summer, over two decades since the Teddy Ruxpin Days, our family was in Okinawa celebrating my grandma’s 88th birthday and all of us got up and danced the Kachashi around my grandma who was also dancing. Today I have my family to thank for giving me the support I needed to express myself freely. I hope I’m still dancing the Kachashi when I’m 88.
